Celebrating Christmas french style!

As bakers, Christmas truly is our most wonderful time of the year! The opportunity to create that something a little more special, a little more decadent, to celebrate the season, coupled with the return of familiar favourites such as our buttery, generous mince pies and cranberry studded fruity chewy bread, filling the bakery with the sweet smell of spiced fruits.

Les Treize Desserts

The joy of good food is, of course, not just in the taste and flavour, it’s also about bringing people together, which is why we love the old Provence tradition of Les Treize Desserts – a sweet grazing table made up of 13 different sweet treats that gets laid out on Christmas Eve for family, guests and neighbours to enjoy through the festive period.

Producing 13 desserts sounds like a lot of work, but it’s actually remarkably simple to do and the table of treats provides a lovely focal point for chatting and mingling. The ‘desserts’ are actually an array of fresh and dried fruits, nuts, sweets, and simple baked goods to suit your taste – the only rule is that there must be 13 of them, a nod to the origin of the tradition when each offering represented Jesus and one of the 12 apostles.

On our table we like to have fresh fruits, such as clementines, pears and apples; dried fruits, such as apricots, figs and dates; nuts, such as pecans, walnuts and cashews; sweets, such as nougat and fruits confit, and baked goods, such as almond bites and mince pies.

January Joy

Another French tradition that we enthusiastically embrace is the Galette de Rois, traditionally enjoyed on the Epiphany on January 6th. Our “Cake of Kings” is an incredibly light and buttery puff pastry, filled with almond custard cream, and containing a single ceramic ‘feve’. Whoever finds the feve is King or Queen for the day.

Or, if you fancy embracing a little Spanish influence into your celebrations this year, we will also be offering a Roscon de Reyes, a rich, sweet brioche ring topped with candied fruits.
